A little about me:
Hello swimmers, I’m Matthew! I proudly have over 1,000 hours in teaching experience and have successfully trained 100s of students become safe and independent swimmers. My experience includes young children, adults, beginner to advanced, and those with special needs.
Having gone through extensive training, earning my “Water Safety Instructor Certification”, I am experienced in teaching all 8 swims: doggie paddle, freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke, double backstroke, elementary backstroke and sidestroke.
While learning water safety and all 8 strokes may sound like a lot, I break each swim down into simple bite size pieces. This methodology is what I call “Gradual Progression”, where we start off simple, but then gradually add to a swimmer’s repertoire and technique. For example, first we’ll do the kick, then we’ll keep the kick, then add the breathing, then we’ll keep the kick/breathing, then add the arms – and so on! I’ve found this gradual method to be very successful in teaching these swims quickly while maintaining good technique.
For new swimmers, we’ll spend a lot of time learning safety skills like doggie paddle, floating, and kicking on our back, as well as treading. From there, we’ll tie each of those together: doggie paddle then rolling over on our back, treading into doggie paddle, doggie paddle into treading, etc. Basically, understanding how to control the water (instead of the water controlling us!) in a way a swimmer can stay safe.
There’s so much more I’d like to say, but I’ll save it for when I see you in the pool. Jump on in, and let’s get to swimming together!
