A little about me:
Hello! I’m Jake R. and I am excited to be swimming with Making Waves! I began teaching swimming lessons in 2016 and it has become my full-time job since then. I always had a love for doing anything water-related. My parents used to have to force me to come out of the ocean or pool when I was swimming! The water has always been a physical and mental relaxation for me. As I became older, I started swimming competitively. Teaching swimming allows me to combine all of my strengths: my love of the water, exercise, and being an educator. To go more in depth, my teaching style has always been focused around building confidence for those learning to swim. I do so by having my students go outside their comfort zone in order to realize their capabilities and true potential.
Everyone starts out as a beginner at anything they do. As long as my students are willing to try their best and stay committed to learning, there is nothing they cannot achieve in the water with me! Unlike other sports, swimming is a life skill everyone should learn. Being comfortable and confident in the water is crucial not only in order to be safe, but to also have fun. Water safety is key to learning before moving onto other skills, such as competitive swimming techniques. I believe the best source of motivation for my students is them seeing the progress they’ve made through their hard work. Once a student has gained confidence in the water, they realize they have the ability to do much more than they thought possible.
I teach students to swim from all different backgrounds, including those with special needs. I have been a lead swim instructor for many special needs swim lessons and previously worked at an all special needs school as a swim instructor. Every swimmer learns differently, so it is my job as a swim educator to be able to find what works best for each swimmer! I work with parents and students directly to understand what the goals we are trying to achieve are and it is my job to create the proper lesson plans over the course of the session to be able to achieve said goals.
I am certified in Lifeguarding, CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid from the American Red Cross and I am registered/certified by USA Swimming as a Swim Coach. Rest assured, I can teach anybody to swim and make it a fun, positive and exciting experience for them. Let’s get in the water and start learning!
