My name is Lila Ench and I have been certified as a Water Safety Instructor since the summer of 2016. I have been swimming for about 16 years – recreationally as a child and competitively throughout my middle and high school experience. On a personality basis, I would consider myself to be someone who is hardworking, passionate and kind. These traits are easily able to translate into swim instructing. I teach swimming in a way that is firstly shrouded in water safety skills, then progressive towards class sessions that are both fun and extremely effective. My teaching style is based in first bonding with anyone I will be instructing, while also maintaining a sense of professionalism in order to get the importance of learning how to swim across. I also keep in mind that everyone who is learning how to swim has their own specific needs and styles – so I try to be understanding and forward thinking regarding ways to make each student as comfortable as possible in the water.
When I think of beginner swimmers, I feel excited. Learning how to swim is a whole new world, and experiencing comfort while also understanding the importance of water safety is a special thing to share and to teach another person. We are all beginners at something, and the beautiful thing about teaching swimming is that by the end of these swim sessions – there will be continuous learning and growth. One day the people learning how to swim will not be considered beginners, but experienced. It is an honor to bring that knowledge into another person’s life. Speaking of water safety, I relate to the sentiment that Making Waves believes in – which is that survival skills are most important when learning how to swim. One of the many things that makes swimming different than other sports is that survival skills are a necessity. It’s one thing to master difficult strokes, but it’s another thing entirely to feel comfortable enough to actually be able to save yourself in the water. I believe firstly that learning those skills is of utmost importance. I motivate children by celebrating what they are naturally inclined to doing in the water – and helping them progressively get more comfortable learning skills that are more difficult for them to accomplish. If I am teaching anyone who has special needs, I take into consideration the circumstances that require extra attention – but I also firmly believe that swimming is a learned skill that can be mastered by any individual. In regards to meeting parents goals, I believe communication is a key not only to create a successful working environment – but also to a level of comfort with both parties involved (the student & family, and the instructor). I fully take parents needs into consideration and am always able to shape lessons in ways that are suitable to everyone involved.
Currently, I hold certifications in CPR, Lifeguarding, Lifeguard management and Water Safety Instructing. I have gone through the official training of the Making Waves program as well as the training that was mandatory for all of the above certifications.
