A little about me:
Swimming has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I spent 9 years swimming competitively for my local YMCA. During that time, I attended exciting meets including the New Jersey State championships and National championships. Additionally, I have also taught swim lessons for several years, working with swimmers of all ages! I love teaching swim lessons because I have developed and spent my entire adolescence honing my skills as a swimmer, and love to take my knowledge of proper swimming techniques and applying them to swimmers starting out at a beginner level. My top priority as an instructor is ensuring my students learn to feel comfortable interacting with the water. I also love to make sure each swimming lesson feel like a fun activity! I think it is important for students to get comfortable with splashing, going under water, jumping in, floating etc. My personality can be described as encouraging – I focus on positive reinforcement and affirmations to try to encourage students to feel like they are doing a great job, and therefore want to keep learning.
I am more than pleased to work with any student starting at any level, whether they are beginners or advanced! I understand that the experience of students varies, and I tailor each lesson to every individual’s comfort, skills, and preferences. Although I am experienced as a competitive swimmer, I believe survival swimming is of the utmost importance for any student. I am focused on students learning first the fundamentals of floating, breathing, and supporting their head prior to the development of any stroke. Once a student is comfortable interacting with the water on a basic level, then proper techniques can be introduced to further improve their swimming knowledge and efficiency. To motivate younger swimmers, I incentives and rewards in lessons, like jumping in the pool after class or playing their favorite game. Doing this can make class feel more like a game or fun activity! I meet parents’ goals through effective communication with them. Parents know their children best and can help me to understand how best to tailor my class to their child!
Previously I have worked as a lifeguard certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR in addition to being an instructor. I have taught swim lessons from ages 2-adulthood. Further I have ample knowledge and experience of stroke development from my time as a competitive swimmer. Let’s have a blast learning together!
