A little about me:
Hi! My name is Melissa, and I have been swimming since I was 4 years old. I started my swim teaching & lifeguarding journey in 2018. I have taught private lessons, group lessons, and assisted coaching on a swim team. The beach and pool were some of my favorite memories as a child and I love to teach other swimmers that they can have just as much fun in the water in a safe way! My personality type is upbeat, positive, outgoing, and kind. I always motivate my students to do their best and I love to see their progress made after each season. I’m open and adaptive for all students and can easily accommodate their individual needs. My teaching style is very hands on, demonstrative, and full of tools and equipment to help progress new skills and strengthen old ones.
I love working with beginners because it gives me a chance to start their swimming journey on a positive note. I typically begin my very first classes with toys, games, and equipment to show that the water should be associated with a safe and fun place. I focus mainly on survival swimming and always remind my students how to float on their back, tread water, and how to turn face up from any position in the water. I find these skills especially important so that the student can remain calm and in-control in the water. These foundational techniques can save a life if a swimmer unexpectedly fall into the water or drift into deeper areas. I use plenty of positive reinforcement to motivate my students. I like to set clear, achievable goals so the students can progress at their own rate. I have experience teaching students with special needs, both verbal and non-verbal. When it comes to meeting parents’ goals, I like to get a clear understanding as to what they are hoping their child will gain from swim lessons. I then formulate a customized plan based on the swimmers’ needs and track progress as the season goes on. Clear communication, explanation of techniques used, and reassessing are my most common ways to meet parents’ goals.
I currently hold a valid Lifeguard and CPR certification. I have held a Water Safety Instructor certification since 2020 and I have also been trained to administer emergency oxygen, handle blood borne pathogens, and perform first aid. Let’s jump right into lessons!
